Zinc and selenium are two of the most common minerals in male fertility supplements and “sperm health” formulas. The question we hear most from couples in the US and Canada isn’t whether they matter — it’s how much to take and whether stacking several products is a problem. Here’s a practical guide with the official numbers.
This is educational, not medical advice. For the couple-level plan, see fertility supplements for couples.
1. Why zinc and selenium show up in male fertility formulas
Zinc is involved in sperm production and is found in high levels in semen. Selenium is part of antioxidant enzymes and of a protein used in the sperm midpiece. That’s why almost every male fertility supplement lists one or both. Low levels can matter; but more is not automatically better.
2. How much is enough — and how much is too much
| Adult men | Daily recommended (RDA) | Upper limit (UL), all sources |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc | 11 mg | 40 mg |
| Selenium | 55 mcg | 400 mcg |
Source: NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. The upper limit counts food plus every supplement. A multivitamin, a male fertility formula, a zinc lozenge and a selenium capsule can add up fast.
- Too much zinc over time can lower copper levels and cause nausea or stomach upset.
- Too much selenium can cause brittle hair and nails, a garlic-like breath odor and other problems.
- Brazil nuts can be very high in selenium — a few a day can add a lot.
3. What the research says (and doesn’t)
Some studies of antioxidants that include zinc and selenium have reported changes in certain semen parameters, especially in men with low levels. But the evidence is mixed. In the large FAZST trial (JAMA, 2020), men in couples seeking infertility treatment took folic acid plus 30 mg of zinc daily for six months; it did not improve semen quality or live birth rates compared with placebo.
The practical takeaway: aim for adequate amounts, avoid mega-doses, and focus on the full picture — heat, nicotine, alcohol, sleep, weight and your doctor’s evaluation. More on that: what 90 days can and can’t do for sperm count.
4. A 5-minute label check before you stack
- Write down the zinc (mg) and selenium (mcg) in every product he takes, per daily serving.
- Add them up. Compare with the RDA and UL in the table above.
- Check for “proprietary blends” that hide amounts — see our 6-point male label check.
- Ask about medications: zinc can reduce absorption of some antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and quinolones) — space them as your pharmacist advises.
- Plan a 90-day window, then retest with your doctor: sperm take roughly 74–90 days to develop and mature.
5. Single minerals or a complete male formula?
Separate zinc and selenium bottles make it easy to overshoot. Many couples prefer one complete formula and an honest label review:
| Your situation | Often considered |
|---|---|
| General sperm-health support while TTC | AGO Dad |
| Wants a zinc-rich, food-based add-on | AGO Sea Oyster (oyster extract) — check total zinc with his other products |
| Low count or motility on testing | AGO Dad + AGO Sea Oyster, with his doctor’s follow-up |
| Both partners trying | Couple combo: AGO Mom + AGO Dad |

FAQ
How much zinc should a man take for fertility?
The RDA for adult men is 11 mg a day and the upper limit from all sources is 40 mg a day (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements). Add up food and every supplement, and ask your doctor what fits you.
How much selenium is safe for sperm health?
The RDA for adult men is 55 mcg a day, with an upper limit of 400 mcg from all sources. Brazil nuts can be very high in selenium, so count them.
Does zinc increase sperm count?
Evidence is mixed. In the FAZST trial, folic acid plus 30 mg zinc daily did not improve semen quality or live births compared with placebo. Correcting a low level is different from taking mega-doses.
Can he take AGO Sea Oyster with AGO Dad and a multivitamin?
Ask the care team for both labels and add up total zinc and selenium with his doctor or pharmacist, so he stays under the upper limits.
How long before we see a difference?
Sperm take roughly 74–90 days to develop and mature, so doctors usually recheck a semen analysis about 3 months after a change.
Do you ship to the US and Canada?
Yes. AGO ships to the US and Canada; the care team can confirm delivery times for your area.
