If a doctor has mentioned fibroids, one of the first questions is usually: what type? Understanding the main types of fibroids helps you have a clearer conversation about symptoms and, if relevant, fertility.

The main types of fibroids
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or on the uterus. They are usually grouped by where they grow:
- Intramural — within the muscular wall of the uterus (the most common type).
- Subserosal — on the outer surface of the uterus; can press on nearby organs.
- Submucosal — just under the uterine lining, bulging into the cavity; more likely to affect bleeding and fertility.
- Pedunculated — growing on a stalk, either inside or outside the uterus.
How the type and location may affect fertility
Many fibroids have no impact on conception. Whether one matters depends largely on its type, size and location — submucosal fibroids that change the shape of the uterine cavity are the most likely to be relevant. Only imaging and your doctor can tell you which situation applies to you. (More in fibroids and fertility.)
Symptoms to watch for
Many fibroids cause no symptoms. When they do, common ones include heavier or longer periods, pelvic pressure, or lower-back discomfort. Any new or worsening symptom is worth raising with your doctor.
