Proximal vs distal blockage — what your report actually means
A fallopian tube runs from the uterus out to the ovary. Where along that run the blockage sits is what the words describe.
- Proximal — the blockage is at the uterine end, where the tube meets the uterus. It is sometimes caused by debris or spasm rather than true scarring, which is why some specialists repeat imaging or attempt tubal cannulation.
- Distal — the blockage is at the far end, near the fimbriae, the finger-like fringe that collects the egg. Distal blockage is more often linked to scarring, past infection, or fluid build-up. When the tube fills with fluid it is called hydrosalpinx.

Only your specialist can tell you which you have, using an HSG, a sono-HSG, or laparoscopy. Ask them to say it plainly: which side, which end, and what it changes about your options.
